Menlo Park, CA (Wokeville Gazette) — It's been a week since Facebook began testing a tool which allows users to anonymously and confidentially sell out their friends online.

Facebook said the small test, which is only on its main platform, was running in the United States as a pilot for a global approach to prevent radicalization on the site.

"This test is part of our larger work to assess ways to provide resources and support to people on Facebook who may have engaged with or were exposed to extremist content, or may know someone who is at risk," said a Facebook spokesperson in an emailed statement. "We are partnering with NGOs and academic experts in this space and hope to have more to share in the future."

Facebook said in the test it was identifying both users who may have been exposed to rule-breaking extremist content and users who had previously been the subject of Facebook's enforcement.

"We've come a long way from the 'like' button", said one Facebook programmer we spoke with. "We realized, early on, that as much as people pretend to like each other on our platform, the reality is most people are envious and self-absorbed. So, providing users a way to feel better about themselves, even at the expense of their faux-friendships, is a win win".

At this point it is undecided how Facebook will use the information it gathers from this test. However, as the government moves closer and closer to a nanny-state, it would not be surprise to see Facebook begin to work with the government to identify any users who may lean slightly-conservative, in an effort to censor, shadow-ban, intimidate, or remove them from their platform.

"We have also tossed around the idea of incentivizing people to sell out their friends", said the Facebook spokes person. "Some users seem very motivated by intimidation and propaganda, but what we've found—through our other spying and data-mining operations over the years—is most people respond better to the gullibility of something being too good to be true. So, we're looking at giving away prizes to users who sell out the most friends in a calendar year, especially if it's an election year".
