IN WHAT WAS EXPECTED BY MANY TO BE A CIRCUS, THE FIRST PRESIDENTIAL DEBATE DOES NOT DISAPPOINT.9/30/2020 Cleveland, OH — In a world with far too little to laugh at, it was a breath of fresh air to finally see two politicians make such concerted efforts to not take themselves too seriously.
"I honestly wasn't sure what to expect", said one audience member who we spoke with. "Things have been pretty tense the past six to eight months, so I was really expecting this to be a brawl. I was genuinely surprised to see how the night ended up." Last night's Presidential debate, the first of four, was anything but normal. Usually we see two polished politicians who are ready with talking points about how they will run the country if elected president. However, what we saw from both candidates last night was more like a shoving match on an elementary school playground. "It felt more like a roast than a political debate", said one political commentator who we spoke with. "Both candidates were trying to outdo one another with insults and interruptions. I've never seen anything like this before. It was quite amazing." Moderator Chris Wallace seemed to be just as surprised by the evening as most Americans were. At one point he forcefully interrupted both men to say, "Gentlemen. I hate to raise my voice...but why shouldn't I be different than you?" "I was trying hard to hold back my laughter", said another audience member we spoke with. "We made a promise not to cheer or boo or do anything that would draw attention to ourselves, but when Trump showed up in that clown face it was all we could do to not bust out in laughter." We spoke to a representative on Trump's campaign who said, "Yes, the clown face was actually one of our strategies. We know that Biden suffers from coulrophobia (the fear of clowns) and we wanted to use that to our advantage. Biden's camp refused our request for the candidates to be checked for wires or be drug tested before and after the debate, so we knew they had something up their sleeves, literally. So, we made our own plans to throw Vice President Biden, and the team talking with him in his ear, off their game." While the official decision is split on who walked away from last night's debate victorious, what is clear today is that the American people really won the night. "To be able to watch two grown men, both vying for the White House, acting like bunch of out of control children was really unexpected", said another audience member. "In the realm of politics, it was sad and a total embarrassment, but it made for some pretty excellent entertainment, which has been pretty hard to come by lately. |
