Speaker Pelosi Lays Out Congress's Contingency Plan, In Case Donald Trump is Reelected.

Washington, D.C. — On Thursday, House Speaker—Nancy Pelosi—laid out Congress's plan to deal with a Donald Trump reelection. 

"We can no longer idly sit back, with our hands tied behind our backs, as our democracy is destroyed by President Trump", said Pelosi. "Though we warned voters, in 2016, that [Donald Trump] was an illegitimate candidate and a serious threat to our national security and democracy, for some reason they didn't listen. They elected him as America's 45th President, and over the past four years we've been forced to watch an illegitimate President—who we believe to be incapacitated—single-handedly destroy our nation, great standing around the globe, our values, our history and everything America has stood for since our conception. We cannot afford to move forward without an explicit plan to remove Donald Trump from office, in the event that he pulls off another election deposition in his 2020 insurgence."

Speaking specifically on an effort by Congress--which is controlled by Democrats--to stand up a 'new commission of top former executive officials and medical experts, selected in a bipartisan and bicameral way', Speaker Pelosi reiterated that this isn't specifically about Donald Trump but is being implemented specifically because of Donald Trump.

The 25th Amendment, gives congress the ability to remove any president that is unable to perform the duties of his job. This Amendment was added to the U.S. Constitution in the wake of President Kennedy's assassination and was setup to make the process simple and more streamlined. However, since Donald Trump won the election, the 25th Amendment has been discussed as a viable option to remove Donald Trump from office, in the event that other options are unsuccessful.

"We've done all we can to destroy this deplorable man, over the past four years, and we are no longer willing to sit back and watch him burn our nation to the the ground", said Pelosi. "We've also learned, over the last four years, that we simply can't trust the American people to do the right thing. We must have a contingency plan in place, in the event that voters use their Constitutional rights to once again freely and fairly elect a tyrant."

Though Pelosi made efforts to ensure those in attendance that she was not speaking specifically about any President or party, she also made it clear that this initiative is being taken in response to Donald Trump.
