Washington, D.C. -- On Saturday, at the White House, President was asked to signal who his pick to replace Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg would be, but it was a hand gesture that drew the loudest criticism. "If somebody were to ask me now, I would say that a woman would be" Trump said, pausing to form a curvy figure with his hands. "In first place."
Critics of the president immediately pounced on the gesture, sharing clips of the remarks in order to label him a "misogynist." "This is a well-known dog-whistle for sexual predators and male chauvinists alike", said one angry woman on Twitter. "These are the kinds of sexist gestures and remarks that we've come to expect from President Trump." "Which body part is Trump imagining when he says 'a woman' and makes that gesture?" asked Daily Beast columnist Julia Davis on Twitter.
"Trump signals his next appointment to our nation's highest court, by using a hand gesture to simulate the shape of a woman's breasts," remarked another critic who shared the video clip Saturday on social media.
"What we see here is that even when Trump is trying to present himself as a man who cares about women, he simply can't help himself", said Roxanne Sailors from the Woke Women podcast. "That's the problem with most sexists. They have one thing on their mind all the time. It's gross and disgusting and definitely not the standard we expect from the President of the United States."
When asked what she thinks about some of Joe Biden's strange behavior and gestures, like smelling hair and touching women and children in ways that have been perceived as abnormal or unwanted, Roxanne said, "Are you kidding me. Joe Biden? Bless his heart. He's like the sweetest old man in the world. In no way are his actions comparable to the shameful and grotesque things we've seen and heard from Donald Trump. And like the old adage says, there are two times when boys can get away with anything. When they're babies and when they're senile. And we all know that Joe Biden is senile. Give the old man a break. He deserves it." For now we're left to speculate whether the President's gesture was accidental or subliminal. He certainly has a history of saying things that don't paint him as a gentleman. Sometimes it feels like it doesn't matter what the President does, it will always be viewed in a negative light, but for now we'll let the video do the talking. |
